On Saturday, June 15, only at NMAAHC, visitors can celebrate the history, art and culture of Juneteenth during the museum’s annual Community Day. Kids can listen to stories and music and participate in special craft activities. Alphonso Horne and the Gotham Kings will give soul-stirring live jazz performances in Heritage Hall. In collaboration with renowned vegan chef and food activist Bryant Terry, items from a special plant-based menu will be available for purchase at the Sweet Home Café. All programs are free, but registration is required.
On Wednesday, June 19, only at ACM, the museum brings back its daylong Juneteenth Freedom Celebration. There will be a full day of live music performances by local artists including Dupont Brass and Noochie, as well as Double Dutch, a chalk coloring book, giveaways and more. The museum’s newest exhibition will also be on view; “A Bold and Beautiful Vision: A Century of Black Arts Education in Washington, D.C., 1900–2000” traces the story of the teachers and students who made Washington a truly unparalleled center for Black arts education.
